Previewing the Next Congress and Administration

Trump and McConnell

President-elect Donald Trump is headed to the White House, and Republicans minimized their losses in Congress and will maintain control of both chambers. What comes next? This page will collect CQ's reporting and analysis ahead of the new Congress convening in January.

A PDF of the CQ Magazine Guide to the New Congress, which contains the profiles of new members and committee-by-committee breakdowns linked below, is available here.

The Trump Transition

Following are reports on how the new administration is filling key posts, as well as other news on the incoming White House team.

Impact on Committees

Following are reports regarding committee leadership, membership and big-picture agendas in the next Congress.

Subsequent sections, beginning with Appropriations and Budget, include stories on how the next Congress and administration are expected to deal with those policy areas.

Also of note: Preliminary committee rosters typically begin to be released several weeks after the election. CQ will make those available as we receive them. However, they are released in piecemeal fashion — and some are not at all — and in any event, are not official until sometime after the new Congress convenes in January.
