As lawmakers head home for the August recess, both sides of the immigration fight say the issue's fate on Capitol Hill will be determined by how well they can make their case in lawmaker's home districts this month.
While Democrats greatly outnumber Republicans in the districts with the most Hispanic residents, a handful of Republicans in the border states and southern Florida have substantial Hispanic constituencies and could be important in any agreement on immigration.
Pro-overhaul groups will be targeting these members, while opponents will try to replicate the opposition campaign that successfully killed momentum for a Senate-passed overhaul in August 2006.
